Introducing The Legacy Invitational
The SmokeOut Legacy Invitational Is one of the new features that we will be adding to the rally for 2022. As a way to institutionalize, the builders who blazed the trail through SmokeOut history while providing them with a platform to invite the next generation in.
As SmokeOut originals the veteran builders will have bikes on display throughout the weekend, some of which may be the very bikes that they broke ground with at this very location.
Our initial class of 2022 is not yet complete but includes the likes of Billy Lane, Paul Cox, Jeff Cochran, Bill Dodge, Steve Broyles, Pat Patterson, and Donnie Loos with more being added weekly.
Each of these builders will have the responsibility of selecting a legacy builder of their choosing that they believe will carry the torch. Look for their names to be announced here as the builders complete their selections.

Well, if you missed it all the first time around, you will have a chance to relive those epic moments this year in Salisbury as Mr. Lane will be featured in the Legends Gallery at SmokeOut along side his Legacy Invitation; Xavier Muriel.
Muriel has been blazing a trail through the custom bike world for the past five years after leaving his tenured position as drummer for the international recording artists Buckcherry. We will be announcing more builders in the weeks to come, but for now ya better get dem tickets!
3. OG: donny loos
Legacy: rick bray

Donny Loos was half of the original Sucker Punch Sally Dynamic Duo and really shot off like a rocket through the Smokeout Years, Undoubtedly a pillar of SmokeOut and a blast that he will be returning to the scene of the crime to help us kick off a new era of SmokeOut. He will be displaying a Don’s Garage Custom in the Legends Gallery along side his Legacy Invitation; Rick Bray.
While Rick is far from being a newbie to bike building, with any national magazine covers to his credit, he is new to SmokeOut and makes him an excellent pick for The Legacy Invitational. We will be announcing more builders in the weeks to come, but for now ya better get dem tickets!
4. OG: Roadside marty
Legacy: dan starkey

Who could say SmokeOut without thinking about Roadisde Marty, his epic motorcycles and his undeniable contributions to the two decades of this show. Roadside is part of the Flat Broke Chops and Rods are and hails from beautiful sunny Pensacola Florida. Hs legacy is on the fast track in his own rights as well.
Dan Starkey out of Indiana is an incredible human being and just happens to have a perfect eye for the old school beauty of a chopper mixed with his own flair. Both of these gentlemen are a welcome addition to the Law Tigers Legends Gallery that will house the Legacy Invitational from September 8-10th of this years SmokeOut. We will be announcing more builders in the weeks to come, but for now ya better get dem tickets!
5. OG: bill dodge
Legacy: Johnny Humphrey

Bill Dodge is an icon in the custom motorcycle industry not only because he has stood the test of time, survived both the physical and monetary ups and downs of life with the motorcycle but largely for his ability to make sure everyone comes along for the ride. In his own BC Moto Bill has taken the invitational from a place of ego to a place of honor, helping the younger builders find their groove.
Johnny is one of my favorite builders in the country. He has been doing this for long enough that I can’t remember a time he wasn’t part of the scene but he has done it all as a sleeper, without tons of fan fare, building exquisite machines, one after another!

6. OG: Steve brew dude garn
Legacy: evan favaro

We are very pleased to announce that one of the original influences in SmokeOut has agreed to come into the Legacy Invitational, Brew Dude! Steve “Brew Dude” Garn has been a major force in the custom motorcycle scene throughout his career. He started building racing frames to support his own habit, graduated into Mountain bike and road racing frames, won Easyriders “Builder Of The Year” in 2008. Steve even built PeeWee Herman a custom bicycle in 2010. He placed 2nd at the AMD World Championships in 2012, was inducted into the IMBBA in 2015, and to date has over 100 tech articles published in national magazines; of course, those include the Horse and Cycle Source. Steve also holds 5 AMA Bonneville Records and 4 FIM land speed records in ECTA and has two number one AMA plates for record runs at Bonneville. He is a fantastic addition to this lineup!
Now, how do you pair a legacy with a guy like Brew? Well, Steve’s pick of Evan Favaro is a damn hard selection to beat. Like Brew, Evan started young. At 12, he was scratch-building two-stroke race motors. He was welding by age 14 and, by 15, had built his first mini chopper. At just 17, he started his apprenticeship at a local motorcycle shop, where he worked full time during high school and learned the basics of mechanical and fabrication work. After winning awards for many of his custom builds, Evan opened Speakeasy Motors and continued his education by taking specialized seminars with Fay Butler. As good as he is with motorcycle builds, Evan is as talented with four wheels and has many chopped, channeled rods and mods to his credit. An incredibly perfect invitation under Brew Dude.
Both gentlemen are a welcome addition to the Law Tigers Legends Gallery that will house the Legacy Invitational from September 8-10th of this year’s SmokeOut. We will be announcing more builders in the coming days, but for now, ya better get dem tickets!
7. OG: Steve Broyles
Legacy: Dan Toce

It is an incredible honor for us to announce that another of the original SmokeOut Alumni will be featured in the Legacy Invitational. Steve Broyles of Stevenson’s Cycles is no stranger to the custom motorcycle industry. Steve has been responsible, both behind the scenes and in front of it for a large part of the Custom Motorcycle Culture and industry for the past three decades. Establishing his shop in 1969 Steve has seen the chopper thing come and go a few times during his tenure but still can’t imagine doing anything else with his life. Notable accomplishments like split rocker boxes, reversed heads, exotic intake systems have consistently made his builds a step above. When it comes to his mechanical ability few compare. He was part of the team of wrenches that helped the first Sons Of Speed get ready for race day and has been the head wrench on the Stevenson / Toce team ever since. Steve was also a big part of the Horse Magazine staff and in turn also a driving force in SmokeOut over its 20 years. It was a no brainer to pick him to get this invite and lucky for us he accepted.
While the name Toce Performance is wildly regarded as one of the elite companies in the sport bike world, he has been making waves in the V-Twin custom industry all the way back to 2004. Known for revolutionizing the Sportbike world back then by widening, and lengthening swingarms but it was their R-1 exhaust system that changed the company forever. Today Dan has the distinct honor of being the leader in performance exhaust systems and many other manufacturers are constantly looking to him for the new direction on R&D. A number of first have been added to his list lately like the first performance system on Indian’s FTR and as a collaboration with Steve Broyles on both of Harley’s PanAm and Sportster models. Combining the old and new is a unique design element when it comes to Dan’s custom builds. This is evident in everything from his Sons Of Speed racer that is a 1917 Indian with a world class chassis to his steerable builds that blend touring bikes with choppers and sport bikes. Somehow he manages to achieve this blend in a way that brings their very different styles together flawlessly.
Both gentlemen are a welcome addition to the Law Tigers Legends Gallery that will house the Legacy Invitational from September 8-10th of this year’s SmokeOut. We will be announcing more builders in the coming days, but for now, ya better get dem tickets!
8. OG: Pat Patterson
Legacy: Mike Schrickel
Click Above Images To Zoom
No one will ever forget the original havoc of the Led Sled Trailer at SmokeOut in Salisbury. So of course we had to have Pat Patterson on the list of DOGs for this first year back. Pat started Led Sled with one goal in mind: To make the Sportster cool again and all these years later I’ll be damned if he hasn’t. Iconic motorcycles built from that platform have rolled out of Led Sled and into The SmokeOut Rally ever since but two of them are SmokeOut Icons that would have to be there even if Pat wasn’t and those are Whiskey Bent and the infamous Impaler. The Impaler will be well remembered as the notorious bike that did the flaming burnouts in the Holiday Inn parking lot. Seriously though, Pat and Led Sled have crafted some of the coolest parts for Sportsters over the past two decades and that along with the chance that these two legendary bikes will show up make him a must have for this first year back. And let’s not even talk about the high striker, barnyard animals, whiskey filled super soakers or the ever popular Ferguson Tightey Whitey bike wash performance. So many memories from these boys at SmokeOut.
Another Ohio custom bike builder will be Pat’s Legacy Invitation; Mike from Chop Machine. Even though Mike only opened his doors to Chop Machine back in 2013, he has over 35 years experience as a Harley-Davidson mechanic and bike builder. He kills that 70’s style with all of his builds no matter if it is a long or a short bike and isn’t afraid to put them to the test once they’re complete. Combining old school cool with form taking a close second to function, Chop Machine is a solid pick for this invite. Mike has also added promoter into his list of credits with the Good Times Motorcycle Show in Swanton Ohio that promises three days of motorcycles, camping and partying. Mike can be frequently seen in bad company with Pat from Led Sled so you can bet the two of these cats together at SmokeOut will be a handful.
Both gentlemen are a welcome addition to the Law Tigers Legends Gallery that will house the Legacy Invitational from September 8-10th of this year’s SmokeOut. We will be announcing more builders in the coming days, but for now, ya better get dem tickets!
8. OG: Paul Cox
Legacy: christian newman

As you may have noticed, this year’s SmokeOut Logo bares a striking resemblance to Paul Cox. Few people will ever forget him coming out of the bottoms on Berserker, his leather-clad custom, and riding it out through the front gate. It is, in fact, a tribute to Paul and those days, and in turn, he has agreed to be one of our Legends to help usher in SmokeOut 22. Paul Cox is well known for his work in the New York Chopper scene from everything with Larry, Gasoline Alley, and Sith Street Specials. But life after the big city finds him continuing to perfect his many crafts, from Leather work to handmade knives and, of course, the finest hand built motorcycles on planet earth. While upstate pales in comparison to the bustle of the city, the art, and inspiration that Paul puts into each of his works shows little signs of their location of origin. He has become the master and has rightfully taken the place of his choosing for his grand studio.
As you can imagine, anyone that would come in under a master should have some pretty solid chops of their own. Well, Christian Newman may well be the perfect legacy for a builder like Paul Cox. CT Newman has achieved more in his young years than many accomplished veterans of chopper heyday had ever. As a full-time mechanical engineer, Christian is used to turning ideas into concepts and following them through to functional models. He has taken this training and created some of the most masterful motorcycles of the day. Bikes that blend old and new accept challenges to defy convention, like twin turbos on a 1939 Flathead. The kind of art in motion that not only goes against the grain but mocks it on the way by. He attributes his creations to the amount of drawing and planning he does. Just like any good dreamer, you must first achieve obsession.
While these two are the last official announcement of the 2022 SmokeOut, they mark number 17 and 18 of a room full of motorcycles like you have never seen before. We are very grateful to both Paul and Christian for rounding out what is a world-class showing of the bikes are culture is known for, many of which started through the inspiration of SmokeOut over the years. You know what’s next….. ya better get dem tickets! Get more information today at www.smokoutrally.com
